FUN WITH CANON REVIEW
IT STRIKES ME THAT I HAVEN'T CANON-REVIEWED FOR DEVIT IN A WHILE. When I first got him in, I used to reread volume 11 like every month! But now it's been quite a while. This is something I should do, especially since it only takes me like an hour (sometimes I love canon-scarce characters!).
JOIN ME ON THIS JOURNEY! For fun, I'm going to take little notes here of things as I read. Some of it I may have had in mind all this time, some of it I may have forgotten, and some of it I may never have noticed! Also, Hakuren has the volumes in Japanese, so I may throw in some stuff that she's picked up from the Japanese that I don't have access to in the scanslation. :B
* Devit's first appearance that I know of is in chapter 77, when he and Jasdero meet up with Tyki. AND PICK ON HIM for being such a cool guy~ who's stealing and eating raw fish. :'D
* He hates being called "the twins."
* HE TILDES MORE THAN I REMEMBERED, at least in the early chapters, ha ha. XD
* Something I'd been meaning to check on for a while now: Devit does not always refer to both himself and Jasdero when he's talking about Noah Work. When Tyki says they all fail at doing their jobs, Devit specifically says that he is not a failure without including Jasdero. Cross, however, is their prey. So he does both!
* Devit points his gun at Jasdero a lot, but also at Skinn when Skinn is crowding him; it's very casually done, not an actual threat so much as "gtfo."
* Chapter 78! The wording on the front page there is weird: "Both captivated by Hell, and deliverers of Hell, that is the Noah family." SHOULD GET ANOTHER TRANSLATION TO COMPARE. Man Devit is a skinny bitch on this page. HE IS ACTUALLY EMACIATED which is why it's hilarious to see how later he gets almost normal, and then still later he gets all buff.
* Devit feels a familiarity/nostalgia for the Ark despite having only been there a few times and saying it's too "gloomy" for Jasdevi's tastes. He speaks for both himself and Jasdero here.
* Jasdevi does a LOT OF POINTING THEIR GUNS AT ONE ANOTHER. I remember this getting toned down a lot later in the manga, along with their general body language; in the early chapters, it's flat-out bizarre. Devit spends a noticeable amount of time standing on only one foot. (He's got nice legs.)
* This is the chapter with the initial "NOAH AND HUMANS AFTER THE ARK" story which got semi-retconned later in the manga lolol. There is explicitly only one Noah in this chapter, and he "created" the ancestors of humanity in/with the Ark.
* Devit thinks Akuma are gross!
* This is where the Earl flat-out tells Tyki/the Noah that Innocence is infernal in nature ("He is the Devil"). He also says "he" here, but it's not clear whether he's personifying the Innocence or referring to some unknown party.
* Chapter 79! Which I'd forgotten Devit appears in! NOTABLE AT THE BEGINNING: when Devit thinks the Earl's been eaten by Lavi's fire dragon, he laughs about it rather than being concerned.
* Devit and the other Noah (except Lulu Belle) call the Earl "Duke Millennium" here, which in Japanese is "Sennenkou," according to Hakuren. Having looked that up, "-kou" both indicates "Duke" or "Lord" (some high ranking) and familiarity/diminutive, which is hilarious. :'D
* Chapter 86! The Noah call the Ark the "Box." lolol.
* Devit DOES DO A LITTLE THINKING, OKAY: he questions the Earl's inability to just leave Edo with the Ark instead of fighting for it. It's not very often that we see Devit and Jasdero just accept an order without either complaining or wanting to know why.
* He does this ♫ on occasion which is something I used to put in his comments a lot more and then forgot about, ha ha. XD Once again on this page, Devit and Jasdero are pointing their guns and Devit's standing on one leg, or at least has his weight off of the other. The leg he stays off of changes, so it's not like he favors one. SO WEIRD
* Devit attempts to get out of going after Cross in this scene, WHICH I'D FORGOTTEN ABOUT. He first asks if they can just leave Edo, then asks if they can help Road with the Ark instead. In the previous chapter he was in, though, he tells Tyki to leave Edo because Jasdevi will take care of Cross by themselves. It seems he doesn't want anyone ELSE to do it, but isn't exactly eager to confront Cross himself.
* Devit's nickname for Skinn is "Baldie," ha ha. Hakuren pointed out earlier that Devit uses nicknames primarily on people he doesn't care about; people he is close to and people he hates get real names (Jasdero, Cross, etc.) Skinn is iirc the only Noah to get a nickname and not a real name, which supports Devit's insinuations later in the manga that Skinn was impossible to get close to/get to know because he was Noah's Wrath.
* Another name thing: Devit does not ever call Jasdero anything but Jasdero, even though "Jas" and "Dero" are both common in fandom.
* It's pretty clear here how little Jasdevi really know about the Noah and the Ark.
* Devit and Jasdero come to the conclusion that Cross can control the Ark, which I don't think they are ever disabused of later. I ALSO FORGOT THIS.
* Chapter 88: Devit and Jasdero aren't in this, but I want to point out Tyki's line "That is so hot, Earl." :'D KYAA KYAA EARL-SENPAI
* Chapter 89: Devit and Jasdero finding the chicken, nothing of note here except that I need to find an HQ version of this page because I love this panel but it's too crappy to icon. XD
* Chapter 93: the chapter where Road and Tyki talk about being lambs that the Earl will offer to God, and thus he needs to keep them out of danger. I WONDER IF THIS WILL EVER REALLY BE REVISITED. Also the conversation kind of ends on a cliffhanger which is never addressed again sob.
* Chapter 98: FINALLY VOLUME 11 BEGINS yeay.
* The Noah talk about Skinn's violent mood swings and puppet-like behavior because his memory was too strong for him to handle. I'VE BEEN MISREMEMBERING, it's actually Jasdero who calls Skinn pitiful, to my surprise! It's mentioned that Noahs have an instinctive urge to kill Exorcists on sight, but that only Skinn couldn't really control it.
* The translation on this page is bad, as far as I can tell; in the anime version, Devit and Jasdero whisper about whether to pretend they've forgotten who Cross is, which makes a lot more sense than the meaningless comments on this page. XD (The line about "So what if we're afraid of the Earl" is also mistranslated here.)
* Devit and Jasdero still refuse to let anyone else go after Cross even after failing four times. I STILL JUST . . . LOVE THE FACT THAT THEY TAKE BOTH THE CHICKEN AND THE BILLS WITH THEM :'D
* Devit beats up on Jasdero for telling Road and Tyki that they've been saddled with Cross's debt.
* Even sitting down, Devit keeps one leg up and one leg down. Other than that their body language normalizes in this volume a lot. They don't point their guns at one another as often (Devit points his own at himself now, which he didn't ever do before) and they don't stand in bizarre positions anymore.
* Devit explicitly states that they don't have anything against Allen before they start attacking him, JUST CROSS.
* Jasdero is the one who says it's been a while since they last got violent with anyone.
* Chapter 99: Here Devit calls Allen "Cross's Student," where earlier he referred to him by his full name (iirc, he does not ever say just "Allen").
* Relo says that Jasdevi's guns are "regular guns from the black market," whereas in the anime I'm pretty sure they're called toy guns. I AM GOING WITH THEM BEING REAL, and also functional, if they ever did choose to actually load them.
* Unless they're both yelling, Devit is generally given a smooth text bubble while Jasdero gets a spiky/wavy one. I DON'T KNOW WHY I AM NOTICING THIS
* Jasdevi's debts are 100 guineas, or 2 million yen, or $20,000 (roughly). . . . Devit starts crying about them first.
* Devit tells Jasdero what attack they should use next. ftr, this is why I think it's pretty obvious that Jasdevi aren't telepathic; in scenes like this, they have to speak aloud to one another when it would make more sense to use telepathy if they had it. I POINT THIS OUT because I see a lot of fic and a small amount of RP where people write them as being able to read one another's thoughts.
* Devit's laugh is consistently rendered (even since his first appearance) as "GYAHAHAHAHA!"
* After using the Purple Bomb, this is the first reference Devit makes to actually intending to kill the Exorcists.
* The crack omake in this chapter is the one where the Noah all complain about being forced to eat hamburgers every night for dinner. XD
* Chapter 100: I SHOULD STEP UP DEVIT'S VOCABULARY SLIGHTLY because it's not fantastic, but he does use words like "annihilated" casually. With a translation, though, it's hard to get good tone from some of the dialogue because it sounds "translated." XD
* The illusory keys that Jasdevi create to fool the Exorcists are not identical to the original. I assume this goes for the items they literally create, too (this is my excuse for why they don't just imagine up a bunch of cash to pay off Cross's debts).
* On this page, Devit and Jasdero DO speak to one another with word bubbles that look like thought bubbles, but I'm assuming that just indicates that they're whispering/cloaking themselves somehow so they can't be heard by the Exorcists. I REALLY DON'T THINK THEY HAVE TELEPATHY as this is the only scene where those bubbles are used.
* Chapter 101: Devit knows about the Bookmen and makes this comment about "No wonder he's here" which I'm not sure is ever explained.
* . . . Jasdero refers to his own "pure heart" ha ha ha
* Devit and Jasdero get pissed off at the sight of red hair because they associate it with Cross. :'D
* Lenalee is "the princess." Devit picks up pretty quickly on how angry it makes Allen when they mess with her. NOT THAT IT'S NOT SUPER OBVIOUS.
* It's not clear what happens to the "Grudge" monster Devit and Jasdero create other than Allen tearing himself out of it. IT'S JUST KIND OF FORGOTTEN.
* I think I've essayed before on the fact that Devit and Jasdero can't create a whole person, just that person as they appear at a specific moment in time or in a specific mindset, but here is where that comes from: the Earl when he is laughing but is actually really pissed off! (Which indicates that the two of them have been on the wrong end of this mood before, ha ha.)
* Chapter 102: HAKUREN HAS DISPELLED THE "I'LL RAPE YOU EVEN THOUGH YOU'RE A WOMAN" translation. Sob! That's like the third or fourth translation of that line that's been wrong. XD
<Hakuren> "SHUT UP, YOU'RE NOISY, YOU'RE JUST A WOMAN! WHAT IF I RAPE YOU, AA?!" <--how I would have translated it
(<Hakuren> "Urusee naa DAMAre yo onna no kuse ni! okasuzo aa?!") (OAKS LAUGHED AT MY SPEECH PATTERN STFU I'M AWESOME)
* At this point Devit says that he doesn't care about anyone else and only wants to kill Allen. (In the scanslation he says "beat up" but Hakuren says he literally says they're going to ~erase~ him or something.) So the line earlier about "YOU'LL ALL DIE HERE" appears to have just been part of their game.
* Lenalee says they're only fools trying to look strong, which is when Devit loses it and pistol-whips her. He actually does so pretty calmly, though, which is SCARIER THAN HIS RAGE.
* Devit makes his ANGRIEST FACE IN THE MANGA when Lenalee calls him a kid AGAIN, but he gets cut off by the door opening!
* When the door opens, the Purple Goggles come off; I guess when the illusion is broken partially (finding the right key) it breaks entirely (being able to see the twins). The Fake Earl also gets sucked through the door. I am not sure what would happen to a person Jasdevi made if they didn't get destroyed in that manner . . .
* lolol there's a panel where Hoshino draws Devit's pants with the wrong leg cut off
* They get SERIOUSLY STUCK ON THE WORD "BRATS" HERE.
* Chapter 103: The first page of this chapter, the twins are drawn in a different style from usual, and this is the only page in the manga where Devit visibly has a package. BUT LOOK, IT EXISTS! SUCK ON THAT!
AND THAT'S IT FOR DEVIT + JASDERO. I could and will do Jasdevi too but not tonight ugh. IT TAKES A LOT LONGER WHEN YOU MAKE NOTES. :B
this has been Devit's awesome canon review, now between my reading of the scanslation and Hakuren's info on the original Japanese I can't tell whether I should make Devit more articulate, more ANNOYINGLY PUNKISH, both, neither, OR WHATEVER. FUCKING TRANSLATIONS HOW DO THEY WORK
