GUYS I HAVEN'T DONE A DEVIT ESSAY IN A WHILE
But I have been meaning to do this one since Tyki introed, so! HAVE AN ESSAY ON DEVIT AND TYKI. Well not just about them, but about how that whole THING has affected Devit in the past couple weeks.
Or something. Anyway, Devit's been pretty upset and lash-outty lately--well, kind of! In certain situations, with certain people. And then he gets over it and is cool with that person again, and then he moves on to lashing out at someone else, etc. And it's all Tyki's fault. AREN'T YOU HAPPY, TYKI! It's a complicated situation and it stems from Tyki having returned to camp without his memories and being "different."
First off, I can't really explain this without relationship-memeing for Tyki on the way they are in canon and as a baseline. So HERE'S HOW THAT IS. In canon and in general, Devit has mixed feelings on Tyki. One of the biggest is jealousy. In canon we really just see how he treats Tyki in a few instances; they have a sort of brotherly relationship where they pick on one another, and Devit in particular picks on Tyki, insulting him a lot and getting really angry when Tyki reciprocates. Their relationship isn't "friendly," but it's familiar and familial! Devit likes to pick on Tyki for being a dirty hobo and a failure and gets really pissy when Tyki points out he's one too. I LOVE THE NOAH FAMILY, Y'ALL. :D
The thing is, Tyki is like . . . basically the Best Noah Ever, in canon. EVERYONE LOVES TYKI. Rhode loves Tyki best! Cyril loves Tyki (and Rhode) best! The Earl loves Tyki (and Rhode) best! The Exorcists love Tyki best lolz. Humans love Tyki best; he is accepted by them in a way Devit and Jasdero aren't, which is pretty clear from their whole reaction shot during Krory's fight etc. Devit and Jasdero are the only Noah we see who blatantly dislike and make fun of Tyki (well, there's Wisely, but even Wisely is respectful towards him and doesn't seem to DISLIKE him so much as just kinda pick on him for fun).
The point is that Tyki has an EXTREMELY SUCCESSFUL LIFE no matter what he is doing at the time. As a hobo, he's popular and has buddies. As a nobleman, he's popular with the ladies and sought after and all that. As a Noah, he's fucking terrifying in a fight and impressive and almost always successful. Devit doesn't have any of these things! He IS A FAILURE (well, not entirely, but relatively so) with no friends except Jasdero, a bad attitude, etc. I sincerely doubt that he has a white life at all. I don't think he CAN, really, not in canon, because of his lack of social skills and bad attitude and poor self-esteem. So yeah, I do think that that's STRONGLY RELATED to why he makes it a point to pick on Tyki. The mean girls are just jealous, after all. :D Devit has everything to be jealous of when it comes to Tyki. Tyki's older and popular and smokin' hot and really damn powerful! He is favored over the other Noah! He has social skills and is capable of fitting in with different sets of people! BUT IN DEVIT'S EYES HE'S JUST AN UNEDUCATED, SMELLY HOBO, AND GODDAMMIT WHY DOES HE GET ALL THE ATTENTION AND AUUUUGH!
There's a little more to it than that, though. First off, Devit does care about Tyki because they're both Noahs. It's built into his genes, and it's reinforced by the life they live. He cares about Tyki in that familial "I love you, but I don't like you" sort of way. He HAS to love Tyki because they're in this crazy genocidal plot together! But he doesn't have to want to hang out with him or respect him. The other thing is that BECAUSE of Tyki's success, Devit can't help but look up to him a little. And this is important! Devit is jealous of Tyki, and a part of him honestly doesn't understand WHY Tyki is so popular and Devit isn't. But another part of him is like . . . "Man, I wish that were me, look how cool everyone thinks Tyki is, he really gets ahead because of how he is and what he does." He doesn't think Tyki is inherently awesome or right, but he sure does know how to handle himself and come out on top. If Tyki thinks it's cool to do something, it's probably okay to do, because everyone always loves what Tyki does.
This was really important when Devit first got to camp. I mean like literally the first day. Tyki had already been in camp for SOME TIME, like at least a year and maybe two, and he was one of the very first people Devit ran into when he introed. And Tyki gave him some advice! It boiled down to "I don't know how you're going to live half a life (without Jasdero here), but you have to figure something out, so I suggest making friends and just doing your best." Devit was NOT REALLY OKAY with the idea of making friends, especially without Jasdero. For a couple of weeks he resisted this entirely! It goes against what he is! Or so he believed, anyway. But in the end, he was too lonely and in too much pain, and he started to open up a little. A BIG PART of why he finally caved to that was that Tyki told him that it was okay. And if Tyki thinks it's okay--well, it's probably okay. It's not that Devit respects Tyki's wisdom, but he knows that Tyki is successful and that he's loved by the Earl and Noah and all that. So if Tyki tells him to do something--first off, if it's the Wrong Thing, he can blame Tyki and not himself! And secondly, it's probably not the Wrong Thing, because Tyki is ~*~*~perfect~*~*~ and never does the wrong damned thing.
Throughout the first Tyki's stay at camp, that pattern continued. There were things Devit wanted to do, but he felt they were WRONG AND BAD and he should stop himself from doing them. Making friends! Compromising in order to get along with people! Dating a human! Allowing himself a social life! Being happy outside of his bond with Jasdero! This was all stuff that Devit resisted, which made him miserable, until Tyki just rolled his eyes and lit a cigarette and set him straight. YES DEVIT IT'S OKAY TO LIKE PEOPLE. YES DEVIT IT'S OKAY TO NOT WANT TO KILL YOUR BOYFRIEND. That stuff meant a lot more coming from Tyki than it could have from anyone else, because Tyki is a Noah and knows what that's like, and he's not just A NOAH, he's like, THE COOLEST NOAH! Or so everyone else thinks, anyway. So again, there was a great comfort in the whole situation: "I want to do this anyway, but I'm worried, but Tyki did it first and he seems to be okay, and hey if we get in trouble with the Earl it'll all land on him and not on me anyway!"
SO BY NOW IT'S PROBABLY PRETTY CLEAR WHY DEVIT IS SO PISSED THAT TYKI'S FORGOTTEN EVERYTHING ABOUT CAMP. Tyki forgetting things totally negates all of the above. Now DEVIT is the one who has a human boyfriend and TYKI is the one who's like "What the fuck are you talking about, that's stupid." And it doesn't really work the other way around. Devit's the ROGUE UNCOOL REBELLIOUS YOUNGER FAILNOAH; he can't be someone that Tyki looks up to or goes "Well, Devit did it, so it's okay!" Not to mention that this Tyki is BLATANTLY DIFFERENT from the last one, in a lot of tiny ways.
What it all adds up to is that Devit is really scared now. He took great solace before in the fact that he was not the ONLY NOAH who was engaging in these activities. But now he is! Now Devit is the one stuck with a black/white life-esque situation, and with having changed his life and made some big decisions and allowed himself to partially integrate with humans, and Tyki had been right there with him, BUT NOW ALL OF THAT IS ERASED LOL! He is the only one, and that is terrifying. If they go back home and Tyki goes "HEY EARL DEVIT WAS IN LOVE WITH A HUMAN" and the Earl gets mad at him, Devit can't throw back "WELL SO IS TYKI!" because Tyki's . . . not, not anymore. And in his mind it's Tyki's FAULT in the first place that he opened himself up as much as he did.
So in the end, DEVIT IS REALLY FUCKING MAD AT TYKI FOR FORGETTING. He knows it's irrational! He knows Tyki can't help it! But oh god is he ever pissed off at him. It's not that he's mad that Tyki forgot the ~time they spent together~ or anything like that; he's mad that he stands alone to take the fall now if a fall comes, and that the fall will be Tyki's fault, and that Tyki doesn't even know that and WHAT'S MORE, claims that he would NEVER DO THAT when he SO DID. It's unbelievably frustrating and scary and it's made Devit bitchier than usual and really pissy towards the new Tyki.
The other issue is that Devit found out Tyki was back when Shigure approached him and was like "Yeah he's back don't tell him he was here before." This was completely the worst thing to do. The people who are hiding things from Tyki have good reason to; Tyki is a Noah and is crazy, and he no longer has any emotional attachment to anyone here, so there's a possibility that Tyki will be like "lol hay Shigure I heard I loved you well here let me rip out your heart to show you how I feel about THAT!" It could happen! But the thing is, Devit is also a Noah, and he was really shaken by the idea that he could leave camp, forget everyone, come back, and his old friends would all avoid him because they didn't want to deal with him anymore. It just really hit on Devit's whole insecurity issue of "The people who like me right now only like me because they have to, if they had the chance to ditch me without consequence they all would." This is something that he kind of does believe! There is a part of Devit that's still like "everyone thinks I'm THE M WORD and is disgusted by me and would be better off without me." And even though he KNOWS Shigure has a good reason for wanting Tyki to remain in the dark, that is really how that whole conversation felt to him: "Don't tell Tyki about anything that happened because none of us want to be his friend anymore and I never cared about him anyway so now we can all live on without him and he'll never know, yay!" It was kind of a gutpunch to Devit because the idea of that happening to HIM really upset him. It made him wary of all his friends for a while, and he ended up blowing up on like five people until they reassured him that it wasn't true, and now he's a little better but still twitchy when it comes up.
Plus there's the way Tyki's treated his own former friends, which isn't helping matters. Tyki blew off Michael and seems to be disgusted and annoyed that he had friends/lovers/connections at all in camp before, and that leads Devit to the TWIN FEAR that like, Hakuren or Michael or Shuri or whomever else will leave, or that Maora will come back or something, and they'll have forgotten him and have the Tyki Reaction of "Ha ha but who cares I hate you now let's never talk again because even if we were friends before I don't remember it anymore." Or, WORST CASE SCENARIO, that Jasdero will come back and will have forgotten things and will hate Devit for everything, or will force Devit to give up what he has now (happiness and a social life and a future), which honestly Devit would fight as hard as he could but in the end he can not ever break his bond with Jasdero and IT COULD HAPPEN, AHHHHH.
So . . . tl;dr this is why Devit is mad at Tyki and paranoid about his social life right now, and alternating between clingy and lashy, and why he just wants Tyki to remember and for everything to go back to normal, so that he doesn't feel so alone and precarious in the world anymore. 8( Bawwwww. HE IS GETTING BETTER, around most people he's okay now, but he's still really bothered by the whole situation and angry at Tyki, irrationally. ihu big brother-uncle.
